As the Green Team Lead within Quarry's organization (a role I took on in addition to UX Design), I saw a unique opportunity to apply my MSc in Biomimicry to helping Quarry solve for the protection of the planet through their business practices. After presenting a comprehensive proposal to the organization's leaders, they agreed to a biomimicry investigation that aimed to answer the question, "How might Quarry's business practices emulate the natural environment to contribute to a stable human-ecosystem equilibrium?"
The investigation was the first step in understanding what a business committed to the triple bottom line could look like. It approached the challenge through the lens of biomimicry—for who better to teach us how to fit in on this planet than nature itself?
By engaging in the Biomimicry process, Quarry was able to learn how their business practices compared to those of natural ecosystems. The comparison resulted in an abundance of opportunities for Quarry to act on to shift towards environmental sustainability and focused on the following goals:
Activities included stakeholder interviews, a BCorp Environmental Scorecard assessment, Life's Principles heuristic analysis, competitive benchmarking, and ecosystem mapping and leverage points.
Armed with the final report, Quarry’s executive leadership team was equipped to understand what it would take to truly commit to the planet and the steps they needed to take to get there and committed to advancing towards BCorp certification.
